DAY 1: Tuesday - Arrive in Porto (D)

Arrive in Porto and transfer to your hotel. Balance of the day is at leisure to explore Portugal’s second largest city. In the evening, at approximately 7 pm, meet your Tour Manager and fellow travelers and enjoy a Welcome Drink and orientation meeting on the sensational journey that lies ahead, followed by a Welcome Dinner

DAY 2: Wednesday - Porto City Tour (B)

Today, enjoy a sightseeing tour of Porto with a local guide. Take a panoramic drive to the mouth of the Douro River, and visit the Church of Sao Francisco and the Stock Exchange, renowned for its exquisite neoclassical façade and ornate gilded Arabian Hall. Finish the tour with a visit to a Port Wine Cellar for a tasting. Spend the balance of the day at leisure or, choose to participate in the optional Douro River Cruise with local meal. Enjoy a meal of local specialties in a typical restaurant, then cruise along the colorful river valley, viewing the city from a new perspective. Pass by the numerous port wine cellars and under the magnificent bridges crossing the valley

DAY 3: Thursday - Coimbra, Drive to Tomar, Convent of Christ (B, D)

This morning, depart Porto and drive south to Coimbra, the third-largest city in Portugal. Visit the university of Coimbra, among the oldest universities in Europe, with more than 700 years of history. Continue your journey to Tomar, one of Portugal’s historical jewels. Upon arrival, visit the hilltop Convent of Christ with its famous Manueline window. Tonight, dinner is at your hotel

DAY 4: Friday - Fatima, Drive to Lisbon (B)

This morning drive to Lisbon. Stop in Fatima, one of the most important Catholic shrines in the world dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Its Sanctuary welcomes millions of pilgrims from all over the world. Fatima's fame is due to the Apparitions of Our Lady of the Rosary that appeared to three shepherd children in 1917. Here, visit the great Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary built in neoclassical style, flanked by colonnades linking it with the extensive convent. Continue your journey to Lisbon, one of the oldest cities in Europe, over 2,000 years old, and capital of Portugal since 1147. Tonight, attend the optional Fado Dinner. Travel to one of Lisbon's oldest districts and join one of the popular performances of local songs, accompanied by a gentle guitar playing Portuguese melodies. Enjoy dinner with wine before a brief drive through the illuminated city

DAY 5: Saturday - Lisbon City Tour (B)

In Lisbon, the tour begins with a stop at the top of Edward VII’s Park to enjoy a magnificent view over the hills of Lisbon and the River Tagus. Next, view the treasured 16th century Belem Tower, a monument to Portugal's Age of Discovery and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Continue to visit the Jeronimos Monastery, an impressive symbol of the country’s power and wealth and resting place of explorer Vasco da Gama. Time for lunch on your own in this delightful setting before an afternoon at leisure. Perhaps join the optional tour to quaint Sintra, the "Glorious Eden" of Lord Byron, and summer retreat of the royal court, highlighted by lavish romantic castles and stunning monuments. Visit the Sintra Royal Palace, a 15th-century royal residence, containing one of the largest tile collections in Portugal. Then enjoy some free time in the Village Historical Center before returning to Lisbon

DAY 6: Sunday - Excursion to Evora (B, D)

This morning, head to Evora. Take a guided tour and discover the town's massive walls and Roman Temple, early Gothic Cathedral, and Sao Francisco Church that is famous for its Ossuary chapel, whose walls are decorated with thousands of human bones and skulls. Continue to Evora's main square, the Praça do Giraldo, and walk through the cobbled streets of this former royal town. Later, return to Lisbon. Tonight, enjoy a delectable Farewell Dinner with your fellow travelers

DAY 7: Monday - Depart Portugal (B)

Say farewell to Portugal as your tour ends today.

Is This Trip Right for You?

This moderately active trip covers a fair amount of ground each day. Expect from three to four hours walking every touring day. The pace is moderate, however you will encounter some uneven surfaces, cobblestone streets, stairs, steps and significant slopes. This tour is not recommended for people who have difficulty walking. Some hotels in Porto are built in the traditional local style and have no air-conditioning. During heat waves, these hotels can become uncomfortable. This is an Off Season program.

Climate & Clothing:

Portugal - Spring and Summer are usually sunny, with hot days during July and August. Autumn and Winter are typically rainy and windy, yet sunny days are not rare either. Spring and Autumn: 44–81°F; Summer: 63–86°F; Winter: 41–61°F. Bring comfortable walking shoes, a sweater, clothes you can layer and an all-weather jacket. Some religious sites may require modest dress to enter (no shorts, short skirts, or sleeveless tops).

Gratuities:

For the convenience of our Australian guests, gratuities are included for your Tour Manager, local guides, drivers, guide and/or driver assistants, hotel porters and wait staff. Since gratuities are not included for other guests, you may still hear references to tipping during your trip. Rest assured that your Tour Manager and other service providers will be correctly tipped on your behalf. For cruise customers, in many cases, tips have also been included for your crew and Cruise Director. However, in some instances, we are unable to include gratuities on your behalf in which case you will find recommended gratuities below. We are also unable to include tips on independent tours in which case you will find details and recommendations below. Gratuities may be paid in local currency or US dollar equivalent where accepted. Portugal - Tipping in restaurants is optional, as waiters earn wages in Portugal and a tip is considered a note of appreciation. It is common practice to round up the total bill to the next euro. Tipping taxi drivers and daily tips for hotel staff are not customary. However, it is important to note that in restaurants and other places that cater to tourists gratuities may be expected for good service.
