Day 1 – Monday – Arrive in Longreach
Welcome to Outback Queensland! Our Red Dirt Tours guide will meet you in Longreach with a pick up at the Longreach Airport or Longreach Accommodation, at approx. 2.15pm. We’ll then enjoy a pleasant drive through the Mitchell grass plains to Winton, home to dinosaurs, Waltzing Matilda and ancient landscapes.
Day 2 – Tuesday - Dinosaur Stampede
Journey through jump-up country to the Dinosaur Stampede at Lark Quarry Conservation Park. Join a guided tour to see this snapshot of dinosaur behaviour from 95 million years ago. Visit Carisbrooke Station and be mesmerised by views of ancient landscapes as far as the eye can see.
Day 3 – Wednesday - Australian Age of Dinosaurs
Spend the morning visiting the Waltzing Matilda Centre and exploring downtown Winton. In the afternoon we visit the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum to learn about the animals that roamed our land and the prehistoric environment they lived in. We stay on the jump-up to enjoy a sunset barbeque dinner and stargazing at the Gondwana Stars Observatory.
Day 4 – Thursday - Richmond
Travel north through grazing grasslands to the town of Richmond - home of marine fossils dating back 100 million years. This afternoon we visit Australia’s premier marine fossil museum, Kronosaurus Korner. You’ll also have the opportunity to dig for marine fossils at one of Richmond’s fossil dig sites. See how palaeontologists find and dig these massive creatures out of the ground before you try your hand at it!
Day 5 – Friday - Hughenden - Winton
This morning, we head east to Hughenden, home to Mutt the Muttaburrasaurus. We’ll visit the Flinders Discovery Centre, see Mutt the life-sized replica dinosaur and local fossils. You may even find a moon rock! After a town tour we head back to Winton where we will explore the narrow rocky channels that erosion has created on Rangelands Station. Toast the sunset with a glass of wine, nibbles and spectacular views overlooking the open plains.
Day 6 – Saturday - Winton - Longreach
We return to Longreach in time for a farewell morning tea and transfer to the Longreach Airport for your flight to Brisbane, or to your Longreach accommodation.
