Day 1: (Sunday) The Ghan, Adelaide

Depart Adelaide aboard The Ghan. Watch the rolling pastoral lands of South Australia merge into rugged Mallee scrub. Marvel as the spectacular Flinders Ranges disappear into the horizon. This evening, relax and enjoy the company of new-found friends in the lounge and dine in the restaurant with an enticing range of menu options. Head back to your cabin for a good night's sleep in anticipation of a striking outback sunrise. (L,D)

Day 2: (Monday) The Ghan, Alice Springs

Wake up with a coffee or juice and witness an unforgettable outback sunrise off train at Marla, in the remote reaches of South Australia. Back on board, it's time for brunch. Enjoy a light bite from the extensive menu or order something a little more substantial. After more incredible outback scenery, arrive in Alice Springs and transfer to your overnight accommodation. Day 3: (Tuesday) Uluru

After breakfast, join your coach transfer to Ayers Rock Resort. Travel south through the MacDonnell and James Ranges. Visit a camel farm and marvel at majestic Attila (Mt Conner) before arriving at Ayers Rock Resort. This afternoon enjoy a leisurely drive out to Kata Tjuta for an amazing sunset experience. Along the way your guide will explain the geological and cultural history of the area. Marvel at the unique flora and admire the view of the central valley of the domes of Kata Tjuta while you take in a magnificent outback sunset with gourmet canapes and Australian wine. (B)

Day 4: (Wednesday) Kata Tjuta and Uluru

Rise early this morning to travel to the Uluru sunrise viewing area. Watch the first rays of the sun set the Red Centre alight while enjoying a warming cup of tea or coffee. Then travel to the mystical 36 domes of Kata Tjuta before arriving at the base of Walpa Gorge. The walking trail through Walpa Gorge follows the natural creek between the two of the tallest domes of Kta Tjuta. Return to Ayers Rock Resort. This afternoon travel around the base of Uluru in comfort before continuing by coach to the Kuniya Walk and beautiful Mutitjulu Waterhole. View Aboriginal rock painting.

Later visit the Uluru-Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre, where you can learn about Aboriginal culture and see Aboriginal arts and crafts. In the late afternoon travel to the Uluru suset viewing area. Witness the striking colour changes of Uluru at sunset before transferring to the barbecue site to enjoy a true outback experience at the Aussie Barbecue. Your guide will conduct a tour of the night sky, pointing our constellations and explaining Aboriginal stories that relate to the stars. (D)

Day 5: (Thursday) Uluru and Kings Canyon

The morning is at your leisure to relax or take part in the many free activities on offer at Ayers Rock Resort. In the early afternoon, travel by coach through spectacular desert scenery on your way to Kings Canyon Resort. Pass through Curtin Springs Cattle Station before viewing Attila (Mt Conner). Arrive at Kings Canton Resort.

Day 6: (Friday) Kings Canyon

This morning, join a guided climb to the rim of Kings Canyon for marvellous views of Watarrka National Park. Follow the rim of the canyon stopping to look down into the canyon gorge at lookout points. Time permitting, you may choose to descend into the green oasis of the 'Garden of Eden.' The rim walk takes approximately three hours to complete and is rocky and steep in parts. It is recommended for those with a good level of fitness. Alternatively, you may wish to take an easier, shorter walk to explore the boulder strewn canyon floor. Stop at Kings Creek Station and take some time to explore this working cattle station. Travel through beautiful desert landscapes on your way to Alice Springs.

Day 7: (Saturday) Alice Springs

Today is free for you to explore the Alice at your own pace. Visit the Royal Flying Doctor Service, the Alice Springs Reptile Centre, Alice Springs Desert Park or the Telegraph Station. There is much to see and do. (B)

Day 8: (Sunday) Palm Valley

This one day 4WD safari travels through the West MacDonnell Ranges to Hermannsburg, an Aboriginal community and historic precinct which is renowned for its Aboriginal art collection and the works of Albert Namatjira. Travel down the bed of the Finke River, one of the oldest water courses in the world, into Palm Valley. See spectacular rock forms, white sands, and an oasis of rock pools and palm trees. Visit the spectacular rock formation known as the Amphitheatre. Enjoy a picnic lunch this afternoon. On the return journey, relax and enjoy the changing colours of the magnificent West MacDonnell Ranges in the afternoon light. (B,L)

Day 9: (Monday) Alice Springs

Check out your hotel this morning and enjoy free time before joining The Ghan to travel further north towards Darwin. Back on the train there's time to talk through the week's discoveries with your fellow travellers. (B,D)

Day 10: (Tuesday) The Ghan, Darwin

This morning after breakfast, The Ghan arrives in Katherine. Today you will discover the wonders of Nitmiluk Gorge with a variety of Off Train Excursions to choose from before continuing on to Darwin and transferring to your accommodation. (B,L)

Day 11: (Wednesday) Darwin

Today is yours to explore the tropical city at leisure. (B)

Day 12: (Thursday) Kakadu National Park

Join your two day tour of Kakadu National Park. Located 257km east of Darwin, this national park covers 20,000 square kilometres of landscape from rocky escarpment, home to historic Aboriginal rock art dating back thousands of years, to floodplains abundant with wildlife. Visit the Warradjan Cultural Centre to view informative displays depicting the traditions of the Aboriginal people in Kakadu. Join your local guide on a cruise of Yellow Water Billabong. Search for saltwater crocodiles and the colourful range of birdlife for which this region is renowned. After lunch, stop at Nourlangie, where your guide will lead you on a walk to view the rock art galleries.

Day 13: (Friday) Kakadu National Park

This morning explore the World Heritage area of Ubirr, where you'll climb up through the ancient Aboriginal rock art galleries, to the lookout for a view over the surrounding wetlands. Join the Guluyambi Cruise on the East Alligator River. An Aboriginal guide will provide an insight into the local culture including local mythology, the river's abundant food chain, as well as bush survival skills. With special permission of the local people, you can go ashore in Arnhem Land. Visit the Bowali Visitor Centre before returning to Darwin. (L)

Day 14: (Saturday) Darwin

This morning after breakfast, check out of your hotel. (B)
