Embark on an unforgettable journey through some of the most stunning landscapes and vibrant cities of the Pacific Northwest and Alaska.
A trip of two wildly different halves, we’ll begin by exploring the cosmopolitan metropolis of San Francisco, the picturesque vineyards of Santa Rosa and the ancient forests of Redwood National Park.
Then, after boarding the Amtrak train to Seattle, we’ll venture into the icy wilderness of Alaska as we embark on an incredible seven-day cruise to glistening glaciers and historic native towns.
Day 1 - San Francisco - Join your tour group at the hotel.
Day 2 - San Francisco - This morning, you’ll get to know the ‘City by the Bay’ on a guided tour. We’ll see historic Fisherman’s Wharf, awash with seafood restaurants and street performers - we may be lucky enough to spot sea lions sunbathing on the docks. We’ll see winding Lombard Street, often called the ‘crookedest street in the world’ due to its sharp curves. The afternoon is yours to discover the sights and sounds of San Francisco under your own steam. You could opt for a cruise around the bay, walk the length of the Golden Gate Bridge, or perhaps venture back to Fisherman’s Wharf for fresh crab and clam chowder by the water.
Day 3 - Santa Rosa - Eureka - Our first port of call today is the city of Santa Rosa. Where wine country meets beer city, Santa Rosa has earned its reputation as the craft brew capital of the USA. We’ll visit a local winery for a tour and tasting, where we’ll learn about some of best-known wines in this region too. This afternoon we witness the Avenue of the Giants, one of the most breathtakingly beautiful drives in the country. The route - a section of the old Highway 101 through Humboldt Redwoods State Park - takes us through forests home to some of the tallest and most ancient redwoods in the world. Then it’s onwards to the historic coastal town of Eureka. The evening is free to explore - we love wandering through the Old Town’s Victorian architecture - or go for a sunset stroll along the waterfront esplanade.
Day 4 - Redwood National Park - Medford - Crossing from California into Oregon, we make our way to the rugged Pacific coast. A scenic drive takes us through Redwood National Park, one of a group of parks declared as an International Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site, for our second glimpse of these colossal trees. Later we arrive in Medford for a two-night stay, a charming and vibrant city in southern Oregon known for its tasty pears and wine.
Day 5 - Crater Lake National Park - We travel to Crater Lake National Park, a stunning natural wonder formed 7,700 years ago by the eruption of Mount Mazama. Fed purely by rainwater and melting snow, the waters here are some of the clearest and purest in the world and it’s the deepest lake in the US. The surrounding slopes of the volcano are blanketed in woodland, with plenty of viewpoints for taking in the scenery. We return to Medford later this afternoon where you can enjoy an evening at leisure.
Day 6 - Coast Starlight Train (Eugene - Seattle) - We’ll make our journey to the city of Eugene and board Amtrak’s Coast Starlight Train to the seaport city of Seattle. During our train journey we’ll witness the dramatic snow-covered peaks of the Cascade Range with lush forests, fertile valleys and long stretches of Pacific Ocean shoreline providing a stunning backdrop. On arrival in Seattle this evening we’ll transfer by coach to our hotel for two-nights.
Day 7 - Seattle - Get your bearings this morning on an orientation tour of the city, where you’ll have the choice to book an optional excursion to the Space Needle. From the top of this 605ft hourglass landmark, the 360° observation deck offers you panoramic views of the ‘Emerald City’ and the lakes and mountains beyond. The afternoon is yours to do as you please - maybe visit bustling Pike Place Market, where you can sample local cheeses, cured meats and delicious chocolate while watching street performers and musicians.
Day 8 - Seattle - Puget Sound - After a leisurely morning, we transfer to the harbour to board our ship for an unforgettable cruise to Alaska. En-route to the Great Land, you’ll see everything from ice-capped mountains to the wildlife-rich San Juan Islands. Keep your eyes peeled and you might even be lucky enough to spot humpback or killer whales.
Day 9 - At sea - Today is yours to relax on board. Spoil yourself with a massage or other treats at the Spa and Salon, try your luck in the casino, participate in a live cooking demonstration or simply marvel at the stunning sea views from the top deck.
Day 10 - Stephens Passage - Juneau - The deep waters of Stephens Passage are a stark contrast to the towering mountains that surround it. As we funnel through the passage, we’ll get to witness dense forests and sparkling glaciers, not to mention a variety of marine life, including humpback and killer whales, sea lions and porpoises. You may even spot brown or black bears foraging on the shoreline. Later we’ll reach Juneau, the most remote of the state capitals, surrounded by water, forests and mountains. Maybe choose to wander through the small city, stopping for a salmon snack on a seaside patio, or go in search of the humpback whales that frequent the nearby waters, before returning to our ship in the evening.
Day 11 - Glacier Bay - Icy Strait Point - Continuing on with our exploration of breathtaking wilderness, we spend the day sailing through Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, which encompasses over three million acres of rugged mountains, dramatic glaciers and fjords teeming with wildlife. Rangers and local Huna Tlingit guides will provide expert insight into this diverse ecosystem and millenia-old culture. In the evening we’ll head to Icy Strait Point, the site of the only remaining restored salmon cannery in Alaska.
Day 12 - Sitka - With a storied past mixed with jaw-dropping scenery, Sitka offers a unique glimpse into Alaskan history. Previously the capital of Russian Alaska before it was sold to America is 1867, you can still see the Orthodox cathedral and Russian bishop's residence in this charming town. If you want to stretch your legs, a walk up Castle Hill can provide great views of the dormant volcano of Mount Edgecumbe.
Day 13 - Ketchikan - Today we'll visit Ketchikan, a town that clings to the banks of the Tongass Narrows. Its colourful street of heritage buildings is a delight to stroll along, or you could wander around the intricately carved totem poles at the Totem Heritage Center. If you want something a bit different, then you could experience the lumberjack show to witness their jaw-dropping skills.
Day 14 - Victoria, Canada - We dock for the evening in Victoria on Vancouver Island. The most British-influenced city in western Canada, it's known for its bustling waterfront, parks and gardens.
Day 15 - Seattle - Say goodbye to your tour group for your onward travel.
