Day 1 – Saturday – Arrive in Longreach
Make your way to Longreach. A pick up will be provided at the Longreach Airport for Qantas flight arriving at 12:05pm. Your Outback Queensland adventure commences with a welcome lunch prior to enjoying a pleasant drive through the Mitchell grass plains to Winton.
Day 2 – Sunday - Dinosaur Stampede
Journey through jump-up country to the Dinosaur Stampede at Lark Quarry Conservation Park. Join a guided tour to see 3300 dinosaur footprints that show a snapshot of the ancient environment and dinosaur behaviour from 95 million years ago. Travel to Carisbrooke Station, a working cattle station to marvel at the natural wonders and history of this spectacular location. See the Three Outback Sisters, Meteor Lookout and just sit back and enjoy the open expanse of this rugged landscape.
Day 3 – Monday - Australian Age of Dinosaurs
Spend the morning visiting the Waltzing Matilda Centre, the first museum in the world dedicated to a song and wander the shops of Winton. In the afternoon visit the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum with the largest collection of Australian dinosaur bones in the world. Hear how the bones are surfacing and are dug up right here in the Winton region and remain in the area to be prepared and added to an amazingly progressive dinosaur museum. You will see real bones and professional animation to recreate the dinosaurs before your eyes. Stay on the jump-up and enjoy a sunset Barbeque dinner.
Day 4 – Tuesday - Hughenden and Richmond
Travel north through grazing grasslands to Hughenden, home to Hughie the Muttaburrasaurus. We visit the Flinders Discovery Centre to see Hughie, other local fossils and hear about local geology before trying our hands at finding our own fossils – shells, molluscs, fish, squid, you never know what you will find. We then head west in the afternoon to the town of Richmond.
Day 5 – Wednesday - Richmond
Richmond – home of marine fossils from approximately 100 million years ago. We visit Kronosaurus Korner, Australia’s premier marine fossil museum, and visit their current dig sites to see how they find and dig these massive creatures out of the ground.
Day 6 – Thursday - Winton
Travel back to Queensland’s Top Tiny Tourism Town of Winton where we will enjoy a leisurely lunch. Later in the day we will explore the narrow rocky channels (rifts) that erosion has created on Rangelands Station before enjoying the sunset and spectacular views from the sunset lookout.
Day 7 – Friday – Farewell
Leaving Winton on our final journey to Longreach for lunch. Your Dinosaur Trail experience concludes with a transfer to the Longreach Airport for flight departing at 2:35pm.
