Depart Hobart airport for the world's most unique day tour as you fly over the jaw droppingly beautiful Antarctic region. See endless mountain ranges, mesmerizing ice formations and some of the most unique scenery in the world.

You are afforded optimal views to the vast white wilderness thanks to windows 65% larger than any other vessel of its size. Its lower cabin altitude mitigates the discomfort passengers may sometimes experience during and after a long flight. USB charging ports and personal HD touchscreens are also available for all seating classes, for those moments in between iceberg spotting.

What To Expect:

The flight provides a full day of Antarctic experience. Our flight from Australia ranges between 9,500–10,500 km round trip (approximately 12.5 hours) depending on your departure city. Expert Antarctic expeditioners are onboard to talk on the polar environment and its history while video screenings depict life on the ground.

Approximately three hours south of Australia, passengers will usually see the first scattered ice followed by dozens of icebergs and ice floes. We then cross the South Magnetic Pole where you will start to view the rugged mountainous topography of the Antarctic mainland.

Where You'll Fly:

Whilst we will be over the Antarctica Treaty area for around 4 hours, approximately 3-4 hours will be spent flying over the Antarctic continent.

In planning our route, considerable time is taken to select the most spectacular area of Antarctica within aircrafts range. The selected area will be chosen from 19 different flight plans, taking into account:

  • Maximum viewing potential from both sides of the aircraft
  • Maximum penetration over Antarctica
  • Maximum variety in land mass scenery, including high mountains, glaciers, ice plateau and coastline
  • The best possibility for viewing should weather conditions be adverse

Commitment to the Environment:

It’s our mission to leave this pristine landscape the way we found it. That’s why every Antarctica Flight is carbon neutral. Inspired by their Antarctic experience, many of our guests go on to become environmental ambassadors.

FAQs

Arriving from another city/town?

  • Your Antarctica flight will depart and return to the Qantas Domestic Terminal at Hobart airport. Check-in is at least 45 minutes prior to the departure of your flight. Flight times should be used as a guide only and are subject to change. Confirmation of exact times will be provided with your final documentation. Guests joining our flight from other Domestic or International ports, ensure you arrive at least two hours prior to the departure time mentioned above.

Are there any age restrictions for the flight?

People of all ages are welcome on the flights, however we do ask you to consider the following:

  • All seats are priced the same for adults and children
  • Children under 16 years of age must travel with an adult
  • This is a long day for younger children and we recommend the trip for children aged 8 years and over
  • If you are travelling alone, you should be able to move around the cabin unaided

Will I need my passport?

  • You will not need a passport, as this is classified as a domestic flight. However, you will be required to present government approved photo ID at check-in.
  • Please allow sufficient time to transit security dependent on which terminal you will be departing from. We will send confirmation of the exact departure time for each flight to those who have booked closer to the departure date.

Can I use or redeem Qantas frequent flyer points for my flight?

  • Charter flights like ours do not accumulate or accept frequent flyer points, as they are not scheduled Qantas flights.

How long is the flight and how long do you spend over the ice?

  • The average flight duration is 12.5 hours (depending on your departure point). About three hours into the flight we usually see the first sea ice and icebergs. We spend approximately four hours over Antarctica and the remaining four hours traveling home.

How does the seat rotation work?

  • Every passenger (excluding Explorer Economy Class) is allocated two Boarding Passes. At the half-way point of the flight, an announcement is made asking passengers to move to the seat listed on their second boarding pass. Business Class Deluxe and Business Class passengers will be seated in a window seat for half of the flight and in an adjacent aisle seat for the other half. Premium Economy, Superior Economy and Standard Economy passengers will have a window seat or the seat next to a window seat for half of the flight and an adjacent aisle seat for the other half of the flight. Explorer Economy seats do not rotate.
  • It is important to note that while over Antarctica, most passengers get up from their seats and move about the aircraft, allowing everyone on board to enjoy excellent viewing opportunities. The aircraft flies in long sweeping 'figure 8s' over various points of interest to allow these spectacular sights to be viewed from both sides of the aircraft.

Can I reserve a particular seat?

  • You may select a seating class but not a particular seat. Seats are allocated on the best available at time of reservation, however final seating allocation is done the evening before departure when final bookings are confirmed.

What kind of viewing can I expect from an Explorer Economy seat?

  • While the Explorer Economy Class seats do not rotate, ample viewing can still be achieved by walking to any available window space or exit zone. There is a fantastic atmosphere of cooperation among passengers as they share the experience. This is unlike any flight you have been on before.

What kind of viewing can I expect seated over a wing?

  • The viewing of Antarctica is out, not down, from the aircraft so excellent viewing can still be achieved from this section.

Will the flight land?

  • We do not land on Antarctica, primarily for environmental and safety reasons. Antarctica is as close to a pristine environment as there is on Earth. The activity of Antarctica Sightseeing Flights has been approved by all Antarctic Treaty nations. Most importantly, you cannot see the spectacular views available from the aircraft when you are on the ground.

What time do you depart and return?

  • Departure and return times vary slightly although you will be sent specific times when you receive your tickets.
  • New Years Eve flights usually depart at 6:00pm and return at 6:00am.
  • Other flights usually depart at around 7:00am-8:00am and return at 7:00pm-8:00pm.
  • All times are subject to change and can be affected by things like airline operating procedures and weather.

How much will the weather affect the viewing?

  • There are over 19 different approved flight plans. Our Captain monitors the satellite cloud picture in the days leading up to departure and on the morning of the flight and selects the route with the best visibility on the day. We have operated over 110 flights and have been able to offer excellent viewing opportunities on all of them thanks to the skill and preparation of the Qantas pilots and the knowledge of our onboard Antarctic Experts.

How low will we fly?

  • When over Antarctica we fly at approximately 10,000 feet or 2,000 feet above the highest ground within 100 nautical miles. This altitude provides excellent viewing while still respecting the wildlife habitats at sea level.

What will be there to eat and drink?

  • Even though this is classed as a domestic flight, we provide international standard service on our Qantas aircraft. Two full meal services, snacks over the ice, and complimentary bar service is provided.

Luggage:

  • There are no facilities for checked luggage on the flight. For the comfort and safety of all passengers it is necessary to limit the size and weight of your cabin luggage in accordance with standard airline practice consisting of a briefcase or cabin bag not exceeding: 23cm Deep, 34cm High, 48cm Long and not exceeding seven (7) kg.

Do I need travel insurance?

  • Though classified as a domestic trip, travel insurance is recommended. Please enquire with our team for further information.
