Day by day

Itinerary

  1. 1

    Melbourne to Sale

Collect your car this morning at Melbourne Airport to begin your 6 day journey through Gippsland. First stop along the way to Sale will be Glengarry. With a sensational bakery -Bushies! Delicious pies and excellent sweet pastries. The Steak & Curry Pie and Apple Tea Cakes, come highly recommended!

  2. 2

Day trip to Maffra & Stratford

This morning enjoy breakfast at your hotel, before you hit the road for today's adventure. Your first stop will be the historical township of Maffra. First settled in the 1840s, the town was named after Maffra in Portugal because some early arrivals had fought in Spain and Portugal during the Peninsula War. As your drive in to this town you will be amazed by the tree-lined 19th century main street. Be sure to visit the Beet Museum, which chronicles the early industry, as well as the cattle and dairying heritage of the district. Experience motoring history at the Gippsland Vehicle Collection, or take a stroll to see the town's original shop verandahs and grand homesteads such as the Duart.

After exploring Maffra, it's time for the short drive to Stratford to allow you plenty of time to explore the quaint town on the banks of the River Avon. Make sure you allow plenty of time to explore some of the amazing stores in Stratford's High Street. And if you feel a little peckish, the local bakery is the perfect place to set your sights on!

This afternoon make your way back to Sale and enjoy a relaxing evening ready for tomorrow's full day of exploration.

  3. 3

Day trip to Rosedale & Walhalla

Your first stop today is only a 30 minute drive from Sale. Rosedale is a small, quaint village set along the banks of the Latrobe River. Known for its premium array of cafes and shops, be sure to allow yourself ample time to wander. And make sure you stop in at their award-winning Cafe 3847 for morning tea.

After morning tea you will be ready to continue on to Walhalla. As your drive into this township, you'll notice how it is frozen in time from it's gold rush days. Once one of Australia's richest towns and home to over 4000 gold seekers, this sleepy mountainside town is now home to only 20 residents. Tour the Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mine, ride on the Walhalla Goldfields Railway or explore the cemetery overlooking the village. The self-guided Walhalla Historic Township Walk offers insights into the town's rich past.

This afternoon drive back to Sale for your final night's stay. Tonight, you may like to get out and explore Sale - The Criterion Hotel Sale is a great place for dinner.

  4. 4

    Sale to Pinnacle Valley Resort

This morning after breakfast, bid farewell to Sale and make your way to your next accommodation - The Sebel Pinnacle Valley Resort. Today's journey will take about 4 hours, however the scenery along the way will be well worth it! We suggest stopping in at Deb's Jamieson Cafe for lunch, located in the town of Jamieson. The warm hospitality and freshly made food will be a welcomed experience after your morning of driving. After lunch, wander through Jamieson's historic streets. For the car enthusiast, make sure you visit the large collection of vintage cars, machinery and displays at the Bimbi Car & Memorabilia Museum.

Then continue on to the resort, about 45 minutes from here. This afternoon, check-in and enjoy the resort's facilities, such as their heated pool and tennis courts or simply kick up your feet and relax!

  5. 5

    Day trip to Mansfield

After breakfast at the resort, hit the road for a day trip to Mansfield. We also suggest heading to the High Country Maze, just 15 minutes outside of Mansfield to explore the Garden Maze. If animals are your thing, be sure to make a stop at the Mansfiled Zoo - set over 30-acre, this zoo has over 100 native & exotic animals. If animals not your thing, feel like you need a wine? Check out Delatite Wines - an award winning winery which is a perfect place for lunch.

Travel at 60 Social Getaways

Travel further when you're not travelling alone

Our Social Getaways are small-group holidays designed especially for over-60s Australians who want the freedom of a great trip without the work of planning every detail. A Travel at 60 host travels with the group, the operator handles the logistics, and you get to focus on the bit that matters — the people, the places, and the stories you'll bring home.

Open to solo travellers too. Many of our travellers book on their own and find their feet quickly in a friendly group of like-minded Australians. Reduced single-supplement options are available on most departures — ask one of our consultants and we'll talk you through what's offered on this trip.

  • A friendly Travel at 60 host — an Australian face on the ground, looking out for the group from day one.
  • Curated local guides & boutique suppliers — the same operators we'd book for our own families.
  • Real itineraries, not whirlwind tours — comfortable transfers, breathing room, and the “off the beaten track” stops the big bus tours skip.

Want to talk it through? Call 1300 414 198 7 days a week, Queensland time, and one of our consultants will walk you through it.
