Following the bombing of Darwin in 1942 there was a real fear that Mount Isa with its rich mineral resources would be next.  Over a period of 15 weeks, miners drilled and blasted their way through the side of hills surrounding Mount Isa to create the Underground Hospital.

The hospital is thought to be unique in Australia, as such the site possesses considerable archaeological significance and an important example of mid 20th century mining technology.
