Itinerary

1. 1

   Begin Your Egyptian Journey in Cairo

   As your transfer leaves Cairo Airport, you watch sand-coloured buildings, mosque domes and palms pass beyond the window. Along the way, you may catch the scent of cardamom, roasted coffee and warm bread wafting from cafes and street stalls. After time to settle in, you join your Travel Director and fellow travellers for a drink. You exchange names and raise a toast to twelve days among pharaohs, temples and the Nile, while minarets glimmer against Cairo’s evening sky.

   Journey From Cairo to Luxor

   From Cairo, you fly south to Luxor and walk Karnak’s stone avenue between rows of ram-headed sphinxes. In the Hypostyle Hall, shafts of light fall across carved columns so vast that the ceiling seems suspended high above you. At the river, you settle into your cruise ship for seven nights and sit down to lunch beside the Nile. Inside Luxor Museum, you’ll move among ancient artefacts, pausing over carved faces, polished stone and details preserved for thousands of years. Back on the ship, you sit down to dinner, then spend the evening on deck if you wish, watching Luxor’s lights shimmer on the Nile.

   Dendera to Edfu: Temples and Nile Sailing

   At Dendera, you enter the cool interior of the Temple of Hathor, goddess of love, music and joy, and look up at a deep-blue ceiling scattered with carved constellations. On an outer wall, you pause before a carved relief of Cleopatra and Caesarion, her son with Julius Caesar, their profiles still distinct after more than two thousand years. Returning to your ship, you settle in for lunch as the Nile carries you south towards Esna. At the lock, you watch the gates close, hear the water move against the hull and feel the vessel lift gently before continuing to Edfu.

   Kom Ombo to Aswan: Flavours and Festivities

   With breakfast before you, you cruise towards Kom Ombo as date palms and ochre riverbanks pass beyond the ship. You’ll continue to Aswan, where the Philae Temple Complex sits on an island in the Nile and you move through the Temple of Isis among carved columns, shadowed chambers and stone worn smooth by centuries. For your choice experience, you can join an Egyptian cooking demonstration, catching the scent of warm spices as herbs and seasoning are stirred into the dish, or take tea with the Captain while the river slips past. That evening, you dress in a galabeya, share an Egyptian dinner and join the drumming and dancing of the party on board.

   Explore Aswan’s Dam, Quarries and Philae

   At Aswan’s High Dam, you look across the Nile reaching towards the desert before entering the ancient granite quarries. The Unfinished Obelisk remains joined to the bedrock, its 42-metre length cut from a single mass of granite until cracks forced the workers to abandon it. You cross the Nile by motorboat as the engine hums beneath you and a white wake trails behind the hull towards Agilkia Island. At the Temple of Isis, you pass walls carved with gods and sacred rites before taking your place in a Roman-style theatre. From your seat, you follow a retelling of the Nile flood and the stories of Isis and Hathor.

   Nile Connections: Feluccas, Crafts and High Tea

   After watching feluccas cross the Nile for days, you finally join a local sailor on one of these traditional wooden boats. The lateen sail tightens in the breeze and the timber hull creaks softly as he shows you how to read the wind, handle the ropes and guide the vessel across the water. During your MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience, you meet the women of a local co-op and watch discarded materials being cut, stitched and assembled into fine handicrafts. As daylight fades, you take high tea at the Old Cataract Hotel, holding a warm cup between your hands as feluccas glide beyond the terrace of this storied retreat, once frequented by Sir Winston Churchill and Agatha Christie. After dark, you return to Philae Island and watch the temple facade glow as voices recount the legends of Isis, Hathor and the sacred Nile.

   Kom Ombo: Egypt’s Unique Double Temple

   With the morning yours, you may choose an Optional Experience to Abu Simbel, where you meet the gaze of four colossal figures of Ramesses II seated above the wide waters of Lake Nasser. You enter the Great Temple and move through a hall lined with standing statues of the pharaoh, following them towards the sanctuary carved deep within the rock. Nearby, you visit the smaller temple dedicated to Hathor and Queen Nefertari, their stone likenesses sharing its monumental facade. Later, you sail to Kom Ombo and trace the remarkable symmetry of Egypt’s only double temple. Twin entrances and parallel passageways lead you towards two sanctuaries, one honouring crocodile-headed Sobek and the other falcon-headed Horus the Elder.

   Cruise to Luxor and Visit Its Temple

   From the deck, you watch cultivated fields, riverside villages and low-slung boats drift past as the ship continues towards Luxor. After dark, you enter Luxor Temple, where light washes across the surviving obelisk and the colossal statues of Ramesses II tower above you. Beyond them, you wander between the fourteen columns of the Great Colonnade, following carved scenes of the Opet Festival and the sacred procession from Karnak to Luxor. After your visit, you return to the ship, moored in Luxor for the night.

   Luxor to Cairo: Tombs and Traditions

   Leaving the river behind, you’ll cross to Luxor’s west bank, where Hatshepsut’s terraces stretch across the pale cliffs of Deir el-Bahari. You’ll pass through long colonnades, following traces of red, blue and gold across reliefs commissioned by the queen who ruled as pharaoh. In the Valley of the Kings, you enter tombs cut deep into the desert rock and meet the gaze of painted gods beneath ceilings scattered with stars. These chambers once received rulers including Hatshepsut, Amenhotep I and Tutankhamun. In Geziret Bahirat, you sit with the Bahirat family, break bread together and trade questions and stories across the table. Later, you leave Luxor’s cliffs and royal tombs behind as you fly back to Cairo.

    Cairo in Full: Fortresses, Faith and Pharaohs

    High above the city at Saladin’s Citadel, you survey Cairo’s domes and rooftops extending towards the horizon. Inside the Alabaster Mosque, built by Muhammad Ali Pasha, you cross the open courtyard and look up beneath the great central dome, its pale marble panelling gleaming in the filtered light. At the Grand Egyptian Museum, you stand before Tutankhamun’s golden burial mask, royal diadem and throne. Gold, coloured glass and finely worked stone catch the light, each surface shaped by hands more than three thousand years ago for the young pharaoh’s life and passage into eternity.

    Memphis to Giza: Pharaohs, Pyramids and Sphinxes

    Among the ruins of Memphis, the colossal limestone figure of Ramesses II towers above you, his serene face set beneath a carved crown. Nearby, you trace pale bands of calcite across the Great Alabaster Sphinx, its human features joined to the powerful body of a lion. At Saqqara, you count the six tiers of Djoser’s Step Pyramid against the desert sky, imagining the moment Imhotep transformed stone into Egypt’s first pyramid around 2700 BC. At Giza, you come face-to-face with the Great Sphinx, its weathered expression turned towards the desert with the pyramids beyond. Later, you join your Travel Director and fellow travellers for canapés and a drink at the hotel.

12. 12

    Bid Farewell to Cairo and Egypt

    You transfer to Cairo International Airport, where your journey through Egypt concludes.
