Itinerary

  1. 1

    Fly to Medan

    Fly to Medan, the gateway to North Sumatra. On arrival, meet your guide and transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure before this evening’s welcome dinner and briefing.

  2. 2

    Medan

    Explore local life in Medan on a motorised becak tour, visiting Deli Tua Market and a local home industry producing traditional snacks and cakes. Later, continue by road to Bukit Lawang, passing villages and palm oil plantations along the way.

  3. 3

    Gunung Leuser National Park

    Rise early for a guided trek through Gunung Leuser National Park, searching for orangutans and other rainforest wildlife beneath the dense jungle canopy. Later, visit a local market before joining a hands-on cooking class to prepare traditional North Sumatran dishes.

    Berestagi

    Continue to Berastagi, visiting a traditional Batak village to see the distinctive wooden communal houses and learn about the customs and culture of North Sumatra’s Batak communities.

    Sipiso Piso Waterfall

    Travel from Berastagi to Parapat, stopping at a traditional Batak village and Sipiso Piso Waterfall. Continue to Parapat Harbour for a ferry crossing to Samosir Island on Lake Toba.

    Lake Toba

    Explore Samosir Island by boat, visiting traditional Batak Toba villages along the shoreline. Stop at Ambarita to see the stone chairs and tables once used for Siallagan royal gatherings, then continue to Tomok to visit the royal tomb of the Sidabutar kings.

    Yogyakarta

    Return to the mainland and fly to Yogyakarta, Java’s cultural heart, where centuries-old traditions blend with vibrant modern life.

    Explore Yogyakarta

    Discover Yogyakarta by becak, visiting the Sultan’s Palace, Taman Sari Water Palace and the historic South Square. Later, explore Prambanan, Indonesia’s largest Hindu temple complex, renowned for its soaring towers and intricate carvings.

    Borobudur & Candirejo

    Experience traditional village life with an andong ride through Candirejo, passing farmland and visiting local homes. Continue to Borobudur, the world’s largest Buddhist temple and one of Southeast Asia’s most impressive ancient monuments.

    Bromo

    Travel by train across Java to Mojokerto before continuing by road to the slopes of Mount Bromo, one of Indonesia’s most iconic volcanoes.

    Malang

    Rise before dawn for a Jeep excursion to witness sunrise over Mount Bromo and its vast volcanic landscape. Continue to Malang to explore colourful Jodipan Village before travelling on to Surabaya.

    Surabaya & Batik Painting

    Explore Surabaya’s historic heart, where colonial architecture and landmarks reflect the city’s rich past. Later, visit a traditional batik workshop to learn about this centuries-old art form and try your hand at creating your own design.

    Moni

    Fly to Flores via Kupang and continue to the small mountain village of Moni, nestled on the slopes of Mount Kelimutu.

    Mount Kelimutu

    Set off early for Kelimutu National Park and admire the volcano’s remarkable tri-coloured crater lakes, famous for their ever-changing hues. Continue to Wologai Village, one of the best-preserved traditional villages in the Ende region.

    Bajawa

    Travel through the heart of Flores, passing mountain scenery, forests, villages and churches before arriving in Bajawa, the cultural centre of the Ngada people.

    Bajawa

    Explore the Ngada highlands, visiting Tololela, Luba and Bena, traditional villages known for their distinctive clan houses and ancient stone megaliths. Later, relax in the warm waters of Soa Hot Springs.

    Labuan Bajo

    Fly to Labuan Bajo, gateway to Komodo National Park. On arrival, visit Batu Cermin Cave, where shafts of sunlight illuminate the limestone chambers.

    Komodo Dragon

    Days 18–19

    Spend two days exploring the islands of Komodo National Park by boat. Visit Komodo and Rinca Islands in search of the legendary Komodo dragon, relax on the pink-hued sands of Pink Beach, and enjoy the spectacular scenery of this UNESCO-listed archipelago.

  19. 20

    Fly to Bali

    Make your way to the airport for your flight to Bali. On arrival, check in to your hotel and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure before your farewell dinner.

  20. 21

    Departure

    Days 21–22

    After an unforgettable journey through Indonesia, transfer to the airport for your flight back to Australia, arriving either the same day or the following day.
