HighlightAn 8-day journey through Jordan's ancient wonders, from Petra's rose-red city to the healing Dead Sea
Home to lemurs, reptiles, and rare plant species. Visit artisan workshops, national parks & markets. Explore Petra's rose-red city carved from solid rock

Floating in the mystical, mineral-rich waters of the Dead Sea. For the full therapeutic experience, be sure to give yourself a Dead Sea mud mask too.

Epic desert landscapes, astounding monuments, and the wonderfully restorative Dead Sea make this tiny kingdom truly rewarding to explore. On our tours of Jordan, we walk the streets of the spectacular ancient city of Petra, hewn out of rose-red rock and rediscovered beneath the desert sand in 1812. We enjoy lunch in the heart of Wadi Rum, where much of ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ was filmed. And we travel to the Dead Sea, 400m below sea level, for a relaxing float in its exceptionally salty water.

Day by day

Itinerary

  1. 1

    Amman

Join your tour group at the hotel in Amman, where we’ll base ourselves for three nights. Amman, the capital of Jordan since 1921, is built on seven hills. Remains from the Roman, Greek and Ottoman empires are dotted around the city, the most impressive being the Roman theatre in the city centre.

  2. 2

    Ajloun - Jerash

We visit the 12th-century medieval castle at Ajloun before continuing our journey along the King’s Highway to the ancient city ruins of Jerash. With its forum of colonnaded shops, temples and theatres, Jerash might seem a little daunting at first, but it is one of the world’s best-preserved classical sites. Take some time to perch on a ledge and enjoy the spectacular views. This beautiful Greco-Roman city is also famous for its ‘Triumphal Arch’, the Hippodrome and the wide street of columns, which leads to the Temple of Artemis.

  3. 3

    Desert Castles - Amman

We journey to the historic desert castles of Qasr Kharaneh, Qasr Amra and Qasr Azraq, before returning to Amman for a tour that includes a visit to the Citadel and the Archaeological Museum.

  4. 4

Mount Nebo - Madaba - Shobak - Petra

Today we visit Mount Nebo to stand on the spot from which Moses is believed to have surveyed the Promised Land. We continue to Madaba, once a flourishing Byzantine town, and the Greek Orthodox Church with its fascinating 6th-century mosaic map. We end our day at the impressive Shobak Crusader Castle, before arriving in Petra as the evening rolls in.

  5. 5

    Petra

We’re up early for a tour of the spectacular ancient ‘Rose-Red City' of Petra, entering the city on foot. Hidden by the golden desert sand for centuries, this is one of the world’s most treasured UNESCO sites. The highlights are the spectacular Treasury and the Monastery, both of which have been hewn out of solid rock. Most of this unique city was built by the Nabataean Arabs in the 6th and 5th centuries BC. It was an important link in the caravan routes, added to by the Romans who carved out a huge theatre and possibly the spectacular classical façade of the Treasury.

  6. 6

    Wadi Rum - Dead Sea

This morning we depart for Wadi Rum. Stunning in its beauty and inhabited by the Bedouin tribes, it epitomises the romance of the desert. Much of David Lean’s ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ was filmed here. Enjoy lunch at Sun City Camp. We continue, travelling down to the Dead Sea 400 metres below sea level, where the biblical cities of Sodom and Gomorrah are thought to be buried beneath its waters. The Dead Sea is rich in salt - even non-swimmers can float freely in the water.

  7. 7

    Dead Sea

Today is free to indulge yourself at the hotel - the Dead Sea is famous for its relaxation and healing properties. Alternatively, take an optional excursion to Bethany, described in the New Testament as the site where Jesus was baptised by John the Baptist.

  8. 8

    Dead Sea

Say goodbye to your tour group for your onward travel.

Travel at 60 Social Getaways

Travel further when you're not travelling alone

Our Social Getaways are small-group holidays designed especially for over-60s Australians who want the freedom of a great trip without the work of planning every detail. A Travel at 60 host travels with the group, the operator handles the logistics, and you get to focus on the bit that matters — the people, the places, and the stories you'll bring home.

Open to solo travellers too. Many of our travellers book on their own and find their feet quickly in a friendly group of like-minded Australians. Reduced single-supplement options are available on most departures — ask one of our consultants and we'll talk you through what's offered on this trip.

  • A friendly Travel at 60 host — an Australian face on the ground, looking out for the group from day one.
  • Curated local guides & boutique suppliers — the same operators we'd book for our own families.
  • Real itineraries, not whirlwind tours — comfortable transfers, breathing room, and the “off the beaten track” stops the big bus tours skip.

Want to talk it through? Call 1300 414 198 7 days a week, Queensland time, and one of our consultants will walk you through it.
