Day by day

Itinerary

  1. 1

    Welcome to Adelaide

The South Australian capital often flies under the radar - locals like it that way, happy keeping their buzzing dining precincts, glorious gardens, and on-your-doorstep wineries to themselves. But the secret is well and truly out, and over the course of the afternoon you'll discover just how diverse Adelaide really is. After your welcome drink, you'll embark on an Adelaide tour, covering every interest base: sports (Adelaide Oval), horticulture (the Botanic Garden), culture (the Art Gallery of South Australia), and food (Adelaide Central Market). Tonight, why not wander up to the foodie hub of the West End or Peel St? The city offers plenty of eateries in which to while away your evening.

  2. 2

    Discover Flinders Ranges National Park

You don’t have to travel far from Adelaide to be surrounded by vines. In fact, just 1.5 hours north lies the Clare Valley, and therein one of Australia’s most awarded wineries. Knappstein Enterprise Winery’s roots reach back to 1878, which yields extremely tasty drops, as you’ll discover at the cellar door in the Clare Valley’s atmospheric central town. It’s the best way to ease into the wide-open, otherworldly spaces of the Flinders Ranges – your commute is a short journey by coach, but it transports you to seemingly Martian landscapes, some 800 million years in the making. Your base for the night is Wilpena Pound Resort, owned by the Adnyamathanha people and their community. Your stay directly supports local employment, training and economic development as part of this MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience.

  3. 3

    Wilpena Pound onto Arkaroola

The Flinders Ranges glows in the morning light, and there’s no better introduction than the sweeping outlook from Wangara Lookout over the natural amphitheatre of Wilpena Pound. From here, your journey continues north through dramatic gorges and red-rock country, where endangered yellow-footed rock wallabies still make their home. By the time you reach Arkaroola, with its ancient granite peaks and spinifex-covered hills, it’s easy to see the appeal of this untamed corner of South Australia. Tonight, lift your eyes skyward on an astronomy experience that brings the outback night into sharp focus, a MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience.

  4. 4

    Arkaroola onto Marree

Arkaroola’s ancient landscapes tell a story almost beyond comprehension, and your Local Specialist helps bring it to life as you tackle the steep slopes and hair-raising ascents of the Ridgetop Track. Plants found nowhere else on Earth cling to this rugged terrain, while vast gorges carve deep into the land. Continue north-west to the Ochre Pits near Lyndhurst, where rich bands of fiery colour stretch across the landscape and reveal a place of deep cultural significance. You can see why this part of Australia was attractive to the 1800s settlers of nearby Farina – but you’ll also learn why they departed, leaving an eerie ghost town on the outskirts of Marree, where you’ll lay your head for the night.

  5. 5

    Trace the Oodnadatta Track

The South Australian outback unfolds in grand fashion as you follow the Oodnadatta Track, a route shaped by the old Ghan Railway and layered with history. Along the way, catch a glimpse of Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre, Australia’s largest inland lake, usually a vast shimmering saltpan that seems to disappear into the horizon. Then take to the skies on a scenic flight over this remarkable landscape and the Anna Creek Painted Hills, where vivid colours rise unexpectedly from the flat desert floor. After touching down to explore this extraordinary terrain, continue to Coober Pedy, the opal-mining town famed for its underground homes, eccentric character and unmistakable outback spirit.

  6. 6

    Explore Coober Pedy

In Coober Pedy, some of the town’s most fascinating sights lie beneath the surface. Explore this subterranean community and discover how locals have adapted to the outback heat by building homes, churches and businesses underground. Later, head to Aboriginal-owned Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park for a MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience, where a moonscape of fossilised shells, cracked clay and layered rock formations stretches towards the horizon. You’ll also travel beside a section of the Dog Fence, an astonishing barrier spanning thousands of kilometres. This afternoon brings another outback surprise at the Coober Pedy Opal Fields Golf Club, where dirt fairways and an oil-soaked green make for one of Australia’s most unusual sporting experiences. Round out the day at Big Winch 360°, where an immersive cinematic journey along South Australia’s Explorer’s Way celebrates the scale, stories and spirit of the region.

  7. 7

    Discover Port Augusta

It may seem impossible for the landscapes to become even more dramatic, but Lake Hart rises to the occasion. This immense saltpan is all silence, scale and stark beauty, with little left of the community that once took shape here in the 1930s. The sense of isolation continues towards Woomera, a little-known but significant chapter in Australia’s modern history. Established by the British in 1947, this remote site became one of the world’s largest military land bases, used for testing rockets, missiles and more. By evening, the outback gives way to the natural harbour of Port Augusta, your resting place for the night.

  8. 8

    Barossa and Farewell Adelaide

Your final day takes you into the Barossa, one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and a fitting finale to your South Australian journey. At Lambert Estate, sample regional wines while taking in sweeping views across the vines, a relaxed and flavourful send-off after days of red earth, vast skies and remarkable encounters. From here, return to Adelaide, arriving with plenty of time for onward travel and a head full of stories from the natural and human wonders of the outback.

Travel at 60 Social Getaways

Travel further when you're not travelling alone

Our Social Getaways are small-group holidays designed especially for over-60s Australians who want the freedom of a great trip without the work of planning every detail. A Travel at 60 host travels with the group, the operator handles the logistics, and you get to focus on the bit that matters — the people, the places, and the stories you'll bring home.

Open to solo travellers too. Many of our travellers book on their own and find their feet quickly in a friendly group of like-minded Australians. Reduced single-supplement options are available on most departures — ask one of our consultants and we'll talk you through what's offered on this trip.

  • A friendly Travel at 60 host — an Australian face on the ground, looking out for the group from day one.
  • Curated local guides & boutique suppliers — the same operators we'd book for our own families.
  • Real itineraries, not whirlwind tours — comfortable transfers, breathing room, and the “off the beaten track” stops the big bus tours skip.

Want to talk it through? Call 1300 414 198 7 days a week, Queensland time, and one of our consultants will walk you through it.
