About a third of the over-60s we book are travelling on their own. Some always have. Some are recently widowed. Some have a partner who’s “had enough of the airport.” All of them tend to ask us the same handful of questions. Here are the answers.
Will I be the only one?
Almost never. Hosted small-group tours and river cruises both attract a substantial solo contingent. On a typical Travel at 60 Social Getaway, roughly a third of the group books on their own. You’ll find your people in the first 48 hours.
What’s the deal with single supplements?
The base price of most cruises and tours assumes two people sharing a cabin. As a solo, you pay extra to occupy a twin cabin on your own. Operators call this the “single supplement,” and it can range from 25% to 100% of the per-person price.
The good news: most tours have at least one departure per year with a reduced supplement, sometimes waived entirely. Ask us which departure on the trip you want has the best solo deal. We track this.
Will I be lonely at dinner?
Only if you want to be. On smaller ships and group tours, the host arranges shared tables at the early sitting. If you’d rather a quiet night, the room-service menu is yours.
What about safety?
The hosted group format takes most of the worry out of being a solo over-60 abroad. You’ll have a host with the local emergency numbers, hotel transfers pre-booked, and travel insurance with a 24-hour assistance line. We don’t book trips we wouldn’t send our own parents on.
Where should I start?
For first-time solo over-60s, we usually suggest a domestic Social Getaway — the Hunter Valley, the Kimberley, the Murray River. You get the experience of the hosted-group format without a long flight. After that, the world opens up.
